Founded in 2019, Swimming In The Room is the debut collection by Korean-born, New York-based designer Jaeyoung Bang, who graduated from Parsons New School of Design in Spring 2019. The name “Swimming In The Room” derives from the original spelling of the designer’s Korean name which translates as ‘Jae’-exist, ‘Young’-swimming, ‘Bang’-room. Referring to herself as a “fashion inventor”, Jaeyoung has managed to weave her love for creating objects that better out quotidian into the world of fashion. Inspired by the transformable toys of her childhood that morphed before her eyes, her designs playully interchange function with design in all facets of her unisex, streetwear line. In Spring 2019, Swimming In The Room will be realized by the CALA CREATE Program.
Swimming In The Room is the first recipient of the CALA Award. This award grants one Parson’s School for Design Senior 3-month access to the CALA CREATE Program which includes brand/marketing strategy, development, production, fulfillment, e-commerce website setup, an event or presentation during NYFW and pop-up, influencer product seeing, and studio space.
